Competition & Inspiration

The American competitor's checklist and the wisdom of golf's legends — to play your best golf on the day that counts.

Competition

Preparing for your golf competition: the complete amateur player's checklist

Competition performance is built long before the first tee shot. Pressure from the leaderboard, unknown playing partners, weather conditions — anything can throw off a player who hasn't prepared their day. Here's the complete method to arrive on the 1st tee in the best possible physical and mental shape.

J-7Strategic preparation
  • Research the course: course rating, slope, length
  • Do a course recce if possible (or check reviews)
  • Check your kit: balls, gloves, tees, pitchmark repairer, ball markers
  • Confirm your registration and tee time
  • Build an overall game plan: target zones, risky holes
J-1Physical and mental preparation
  • Avoid an intense session: you need to arrive fresh
  • Check the weather and prepare your kit accordingly
  • Pack your bag the night before (forgotten gear = morning stress)
  • Go to bed at a reasonable hour
  • Visualise your best golf: 10 minutes of positive thinking
D-DayMorning and warm-up
  • Arrive 45 min to 1 hour before your tee time
  • Balanced breakfast: slow carbs + protein, no excess
  • Warm-up: 10 min mobility (shoulders, hips, back)
  • Range: short irons → long irons → woods → driver
  • 10 to 15 minutes on the practice green (putting + chips)
On the courseCompetition management
  • Stick to your game plan hole by hole
  • Hydrate regularly (1 glass per hole in summer)
  • Eat an energy bar between holes 9 and 10
  • Don't check the leaderboard before the 14th hole
  • After a bad shot: walk 10 metres to move on

Golf is played first between the ears.
Mental preparation is as important as technique — often more decisive in competition.
